What is Vastu Shastra ?
” Vastu Shastra” is an ancient Vedic philosophy that deals with the art and science of buildings. The Vedas teach that everything in this universe, including the human body, comprises of five elements. These are (a) Earth (Geo-Magnetic Energy) (b) Water (Gravitational Energy) (c) Fire (Solar Energy) (d) Air (Wind Energy) and Space (Cosmic Radiation). Unlike the chemical elements, these forces influence us, as well as our environment. The Shastra (teachings) of Vastu teaches us how to arrange our man-made environment, so that perfect harmony exists between us and nature. For, if we are not in alignment each of these five forces of nature, it is possible that we may experience poor health, poor fortune and/ or tensions in our everyday life, as we would be expending our energies in fighting an impossible-to-win fight with nature, rather than leading a symbiotic existence with nature. Vastu Shastra analyses the effect of each of these five natural forces and their effect on the human body.

Why should one practice Vastu?
Vastu should be practiced to harness the forces of nature. If this is not done, energy is dissipated in a foolish fight against nature's forces that an individual can never hope to win. Moreover, it is not just the owner of the plot or dwelling unit that benefits from Vastu – the builder, the dwellers and everyone else in society benefits, as all the five forces of nature would be perfectly balanced and all obstructions to happiness, wealth and health would be removed. Practising Vastu thus helps all concerned parties to realize their full potential by means of unleashing clear thinking and actions, thus enabling them to achieve true potential in a timely manner.

When should one practice Vastu?
Any person purchasing or renting a home may practice Vastu, as it is his family and himself, who would benefit. Similarly, any person purchasing or renting office space should also practice Vastu, since his entire workforce would benefit from the move.
In case the unit (residential unit or office unit) is already constructed, Vastu can still assist, in case persistent problems occur at the unit. Back To Top

What does Astrology have to do with Vastu? Or are the two distinct?
Astrology attributes the fourth house to immovable property, amongst other things. Where the Lord of the Fourth House, the planets in the Fourth House, the aspects to the Fourth House, etc., are all benefic, the person will experience pleasure in his land/ building. Otherwise, Astrology teaches us, negative results could follow.
Furthermore, Astrology lays down several special conditions or ‘Yogas' such as Ayatna Griha Prapti Yoga, Vichitra Prakara Soudha Yoga, etc., that are specific to different conditions of property holding. Again, Astrology specifies that one must observe the planetary configurations at a given point of time in conjunction with one's “ Nakshatra” , to fix the “ M uhurta” or the auspicious time for starting each stage of construction, as well as the “ G riha Pravesh” or the beginning of dwelling in the newly-constructed building. Therefore, a lthough Astrology and Vastu are distinct, together they provide you all the tools you need to harness nature's forces for a happy, healthy and wealthy life.

Who or What is the Vastu Purusha?
Every good teacher strives to make his teachings easily understood by his students, by weaving stories around the subject. The legend of the Vastu Purusha Vastu is as follows:
Lord Shiva was fighting the demon Andhaka, when His perspiration dripped to the ground. This caused the entity called Vastu Purusha, to be born. The hungry Vastu Purusha immediately began devouring all that came in its way. Thoroughly worried, the Gods beseeched Lord Brahma to stop the Vastu Purusha from devouring the Earth! Lord Brahma advised the Gods to hold the Purusha face-down and it is said that 45 deities were required for the task of holding down the Vastu Purusha! Finally overpowered, Lord Brahma blessed the Vastu Purusha, elevating him as the deity of plots of land. Further, he ordained that all plot and building owners would thenceforth pray to Vastu Purusha, making him offerings. In return, Vastu Purusha was given the responsibility of protecting the plot and building owners! Thus in one stroke, the Vastu Purusha was appeased and all plot owners obtained peace of mind!

Is Vastu Shastra specific to any region or religion?
The Vedas, like other religious texts, were propounded for the benefit of humanity at large. Although Vastu Shastra has its origins in the Vedic tradition of India, it is not something that is location or religion-specific. Yoga's origins are Vedic too, but its benefits are for everyone, regardless of religion or location. It is therefore applicable to every human being, wherever (s)he may be located and whatever he his/ her faith.

Is there any difference between Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui?
Both Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui are ancient philosophies that aim to remove all obstructions that cause environmental disharmony, allowing natural energy to flow freely. However, while Feng Shui originated at a location which faced huge sandstorms from a particular direction, its recommendations partially take on a local geographic flavour. One other difference is that although both Vastu and Feng Shui talk of five forces, Feng Shui recognizes Wood and Metal, in place of Earth and Space. CyberAstro recommends Vastu Shastra as we find it more effective, both for personal use, as well as for the benefit of our clients.
